watermelon classic 5k

on april 27, i posted that my first baby goal was the watermelon classis 5k. i did not feel like i was excited about the race, but for some reason i could hardly sleep last night.  i really didn't want to get out of bed, but i told dustin and branan i would pick them up at 5:30 at the y.  they and two buddies planned to run the 5k and bike back from clinton.
we met nathan at the race, who had ridden with another family.  of course, nathan won the race and we stayed for the awards and such so that nathan could ride his bike with the picnic boys back to vicksburg. (still wainting on my royalties for the logo, by the way.)  i was happy to stay as i didnt have any other big plans until later this evening. by nature, im a people watcher.  i like to watch how people behave. it occured to me that most of the race participants are encouraging, competitive, have pretty good self esteem and seem to be at least some-what health conscious. at this point, i'm sure you're thinking i have an unusually firm grasp on the obvious. but, the atitudes also seem to be contagious.  for years, my competive drive has been alseep.  then i started playing softball.  its fun, but theres still sometring missing, and it seems like i get injured playing softball more than i'm getting fit and losing weight.  after the race, all i could think about was getting serious about dieting and losing weight so that i could perform better. i'm not so delusional as to say i could ever win it, but there are folks that couldn't get off the couch two years ago and walk a quarter mile without getting winded who finished in the top ten in their age group. you now who you are and, like i said earlier today, enjoy it for the next year because from then on out, you can count on finishing 11th in your age group.

looking at the numbers, my recently calibrated nike+ says that i logged 3.21 miles in 36'56", which is 11'30" average. i'm confident with the data since i started toward the back of the pack and the course was 3.1 miles.  strapilating the 11'30" avg. speed to 3.1 equals  a 35'39" finish time.  anyway, my goal was 34 minutes, or an 11'00" mile average.  i missed it by 1'39".  and michael jordan was cut from his highschool basketball team.  think about it.
