a friend of mine lost about 70 pounds a few years ago. i ran into another friend a couple of weeks ago that looked like he has lost about 60 pounds over the last year. they both told me they lost the weight by running. i hate to run. absolutely loathe it. but im tired of being fat. im finally to the point where im more tired of being fat than i hate running. i have another handful of friends that like to compete in triathlons who have encouraged me to make a lifestyle change. the more i think about it, the more i realize that a very small percentage of serious runners and triathletes are fat.
i have also found out that mark and robin simpson are the directors of marathon makeover, llc. you know, where they turn couch potatoes into marathon runners in 40 weeks. According to Wikipedia, a person who lives a sedentary lifestyle may colloquially be known as a couch potato. i spend more time zoned out in front of the boob tube than i do outside enjoying my kids, so by definition, i am a couch potato. i'm sure it has nothing to do with the extra 40-50 pounds i've been carrying since 1997. marathon makeover 2010 kicked off in january, but registration closed in february. all is not lost, as i have been inspired... and i'm practically uninspirable.
zig ziglar says we need to have goals in our lives. my long term goal is to lose 50 pounds and be able to run a marathon in one year. the one i am interested in is in october 2011. it's the end of april now. so, im starting the c25k running program this week. it takes 9 weeks. my short term goal is to lose 15 pounds and run the watermelon classic 5k in jackson in july. according to zig, i'm half way there, and it's not even 5:00 o'clock yet.
here's the "before" picture. (i'm the one in the blue shirt.)
